Running Lights Tutorial
*

The purpose of this tutorial is to show you how to make a blinkie with running lights. The programs I use are MS Paint and Adobe Photoshop, but you can use any similar programs such as paint shop pro. To animate the blinkie, I use Unlead Gif Animator. It is possible to download these programs (I use KaZaA) for free.

1) Make a new new image, 150 by 20 pixels.
(In Photoshop)

2) Decorate your blinkie however you want, with a background, text, and anything else you want.

3) Open up MS Paint (Startup, accessories, Paint). Copy and paste the following image into Paint and crop around it.

4) Click the magnifying glass and choose 6x.

5) Click the eyedropper, and left click on the limegreen. Click the eyedropper again, and this time RIGHT click onto a color that matches the design of your blinkie.

6) Choose the erase button and drag it over the limegreen spaces while holding down the RIGHT mouse button. The limegreen spaces should change to the color that you chose.

7) Repeat steps five and six, but instead of limegreen, do it to the black spaces, choosing a different color that still matches your blinkie design.

8) Now you have the border for your blinkie. Make sure that the middle is one solid color that is different from both of the border colors.

9) Go to EDIT, SELECT ALL, then right click on the image and click COPY.

10) Go to Adobe Photoshop, then LAYERS, and click on FLATTEN IMAGE.

11) Now go to EDIT and click PASTE. You should see the image with the border you made.

12) Choose the erase tool, and make sure it's set to Majic eraser tool.

13) Click the middle of the image (it's the red part in this tutorial). Now you can see your blinkie with its first border.

14) Save this image somewhere as 1 in GIF format.

15) Now go back to the border image in MS Paint. Use the eyedropper and eraser tool to switch the colors of the border. You can paste the image in step 3 into the document, then follow steps 5 through 7, but NOTE: instead of making the limegreen spaces the first color you chose, you must make them the second color. The black spaces must be the first color you chose.

16) Copy and paste the image over your blinkie in Photoshop. Save it as 2.GIF.

17) Now open up Unlead Gif Animator (or any other animation program) and choose Animation Wizard.

18) Make the width 150 and the height 20.

19) Click "add image" and locate gifs 1 and 2 that you made. Click OK, then click NEXT.
20) Change Delay time (in 1/100th second) to 20.

21) Hit NEXT, then FINISH.

22) Save your blinkie cuz it's done!
